The Tide Pools

The tide pools are the cove’s free undercard, and at a good low tide they beat most paid aquariums. No ticket, no booking, no upsell on this page; just the where and the when.

Where

Work the rocky shelf south of the cove toward Shell Beach, and the reef flats that continue toward Children’s Pool. At low water the shelf drains into dozens of clear pools holding anemones, hermit crabs, sculpin, brittle stars, and now and then an octopus that makes someone’s whole vacation.

When

Timing is everything: aim for the hour either side of low tide, and the lower the tide the better the pools. Minus tides, the ones below zero on the chart, are the jackpot days; they cluster around new and full moons, often in the early morning in winter. Any tide app or the lifeguard tower’s posted chart tells you today’s window.

The rules and the footing

Same reserve, same law: look, don’t take. Leave the shells, put rocks back the way you found them, and touch nothing with a backbone. Wear shoes with real grip; the algae film on wet sandstone has ended more phones than the ocean has. And keep one eye seaward on bigger swells; the shelf catches surprise surges.
