Sea Lions, Seals, and Where You're Allowed to Be

La Jolla has both, they live two coves apart, and the rules for watching them changed recently. This page keeps you on the right side of both the barrier and the biology.

Telling them apart in five seconds

Sea lions have visible ear flaps, walk on their flippers, and are loud; the barking soundtrack of the cove is them. Harbor seals have no ear flaps, move on land like fat commas, and stay quiet. If it climbed a rock athletically, sea lion. If it’s lying like a sandbag, seal.

Where each lives, and what’s closed

Sea lions own the cove’s rocks and Point La Jolla, the sandstone shelf beside it. Point La Jolla is now closed to public entry year-round; the city made the seasonal closure permanent after years of crowding incidents. You watch from the walkway behind the rail, which is genuinely close enough for any camera.

Harbor seals haul out at Children’s Pool, the little curved beach ten minutes’ walk south. It closes entirely from December 15 to May 15 for pupping season, and outside those dates a rope line marks their half of the sand.

One more thing worth knowing before you plan around the rookery: there’s an active civic debate about further closures at the cove itself. Signage on the day beats anything written here.

The distance rule

However charming they look, these are wild animals that bite people every year, nearly always people who got too close for a photo. Stay behind rails, give haul-outs a wide berth, and never put a child between a sea lion and the water.

Meeting them in the water instead
