The Leopard Sharks of La Jolla

Summer through early winter, mostly at La Jolla Shores near the Marine Room rather than the cove itself. Where to walk in, why they're harmless, and how to snorkel over them.

Updated August 2026

Every summer, hundreds of leopard sharks gather in a strip of warm, shallow water in La Jolla, and every summer visitors stand at the cove wondering where they are. Wrong beach. Here’s the right one.

Where they actually are

The aggregation happens at La Jolla Shores, in the waist-to-chest-deep shallows off the Marine Room restaurant, a short walk south of the Shores’ main lifeguard tower. The sharks come for the warm water; pregnant females dominate the gathering. From the cove itself you’re a fifteen-minute walk or a two-minute drive away.

The season

Roughly summer into early winter, with the thickest numbers in late summer when the shallows are warmest. On a good September day you can stand in knee-deep water and watch dozens of metre-long shapes glide past your ankles. By mid-winter they’re gone to deeper water.

Are they dangerous?

No, and it isn’t a hedge. Leopard sharks are small, bottom-feeding, and have no interest in people whatsoever; there’s no record of a serious incident, and children snorkel over them every day of the season. Walking in quietly matters more than courage: splash hard and the whole aggregation slides thirty metres out.

Snorkeling them

DIY is easy in season: walk in at the Marine Room end, float, and look down. The water is shallow enough that a wetsuit is optional on warm days. The guided cove swim above sometimes routes to the sharks when conditions favour the Shores side; ask when you book, or just do both beaches in one morning, since today’s conditions apply to both. One camera note: polarized sunglasses find the sharks from the sand better than any phone screen.
