Parking at the Cove

Parking is the cove’s real entry fee, paid in time instead of money. The options, ranked by how often they actually work.

The free street spots

Coast Boulevard and the streets behind it are free with posted time limits. In summer they’re gone before 9 am, on weekends earlier; in winter you can luck into one at noon. If you’re coming to snorkel, this is another argument for the early start the water already wanted from you.

The paid lots

The Village’s commercial lots and garages sit five to ten minutes uphill. They cost real money in season, and they’re the honest answer for a 10 am arrival in July. Rates and hours shift; read the board before you commit the car.

The Shores fallback

La Jolla Shores has a large free beach lot that fills later than the cove’s streets, and the coast walk from there to the cove is twenty flat, pretty minutes. On leopard-shark mornings this is the best move anyway, since the sharks are at the Shores end to begin with.

The timing rule

Arrive before 8:30 or after 4. Between those hours in summer, assume the paid lots or the Shores walk. And once you’re parked, everything on this coast is walkable; check the water and let the car rest.
